Amit Shah Slams Nehru, Indira Gandhi Over Constitutional Amendments: A Look at the BJP’s Vision for India

Amit Shah Targets Congress Leaders on Constitution Amendments, Highlights BJP’s Vision for India’s Growth

In a major speech on the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, Union Home Minister Amit Shah sharply criticized former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, accusing them of undermining fundamental rights through constitutional amendments during their rule. The debate, which began in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, has drawn attention to the journey of India’s Constitution and the impact of political decisions on its evolution.

Shah emphasized how the Constitution has shaped India’s progress, while also stressing the importance of respecting its principles. According to Shah, discussions on the Constitution reveal which political parties have truly upheld its values. He pointed out that during Nehru’s tenure, the First Amendment curtailed freedom of expression, and Indira Gandhi’s government passed the 24th Amendment in 1971, which allowed Parliament to reduce citizens’ fundamental rights.

BJP’s Commitment to the Constitution

Despite the criticism of Congress leaders, Shah assured the public that the BJP has always respected the Constitution. He highlighted that the Constitution allows amendments through Article 368, a process that has been used to ensure India’s growth. Shah pointed out that in BJP’s 16 years of governance, 22 amendments have been made, while the Congress, in 55 years of power, made 77 changes. He clarified that amending the Constitution is a legitimate process and the BJP has never sought to undermine it.

Sardar Patel’s Legacy and India’s Growth

Reflecting on India’s post-independence journey, Shah credited Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s leadership for keeping the country united and fostering its growth. He mentioned how global experts once doubted India’s ability to survive as a democratic nation, but India proved them wrong through its deep-rooted democracy and peaceful political evolution. Shah celebrated India’s economic rise, stating that India is now the fifth-largest economy in the world, surpassing the UK.

Criticizing Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations

Amit Shah also took a jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has recently expressed concerns about the BJP’s stance on the Constitution. Shah countered by saying that the provision to amend the Constitution is embedded within it. He reminded Gandhi that the BJP has made constitutional amendments within the framework of the law, and that India’s democracy is stronger than ever.
