Hezbollah Fighters Killed In Pager Explosions : Wound Thousands in Lebanon

Hezbollah Fighters Die in Pager Explosions, Thousands More Injured in Lebanon

On Tuesday, pager attacks took their toll, leaving dead at least eight people, among them Hezbollah men, and 2,750 other people injured. Several of these casualties were dressed as the health workers and included Iran’s envoy to Beirut, two Hezbollah fighters, and other sources, as reported a health minister of Lebanon and other security sources.

The Lebanese government immediately issued statements condemning the explosions, with Information Minister Ziad Makary calling them ‘Israeli aggression.’

Incidents such as these, which inflicted pain upon Israel, were also blamed on Israel by Hezbollah, who said that ‘Israel shall bear the consequences of its actions’. The Israeli military was silent on the matter.

The Incident (Hezbollah Fighters Killed)

The blasts took place around 3.45 pm local time and went on for a little less than one hour. The devices used in the detonation were the latest model of pagers brought in by Hezbollah, according to multiple security sources.

Lebanese internal security forces reported that wireless communication devices were detonated, especially in southern Beirut, a known Hezbollah stronghold.

Injuries and Fatalities

Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad confirmed that 2,750 people were injured, 200 of them critically. Many of those injured were Hezbollah fighters, with some being the sons of top officials from the armed group.

Hezbollah reported the deaths of two of its fighters and a young girl. One of the fighters killed was reportedly the son of a Hezbollah member of the Lebanese parliament, Ali Ammar.

Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, suffered a minor injury during the explosions and was hospitalized for observation.

Ongoing Conflict and Escalation

The explosion is seen as part of the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which have escalated since the Gaza war erupted in October last year.

Both sides have been engaged in cross-border skirmishes, though Hezbollah has stated that it seeks to avoid full-scale war.

The Lebanese foreign ministry described the explosions as a “deliberate Israeli escalation,” warning that Israel could expand the conflict further. The exact mechanism behind the detonations remains unclear, although an investigation is ongoing.

Aftermath and Response

As usual, whenever there is explosions, there was disorder in the southern suburbs of Lebanon where paramedics tried to rush the affected people to the hospital with some verbally cursing because of the pain they were experiencing.

Other facilities, such as Mt. Lebanon hospital and Nabatieh public hospital were filled to the brim with people who suffered injuries on the face, eye and other limbs.

To respond to the situation, more than fifty ambulances and three hundred emergency crew members of the Lebanese Red Cross were sent out to assist in evacuating victims where necessary.

There is a call by the authorities to doctors and other medical personnel against the use of pagers especially to avoid chances of repetition of similar events.

All the while, while the blasts have left Lebanon staggering but Hezbollah and Israeli forces continue to remain in readiness since there is still a high possibility of fighting in the area.
